DOLE-OSHC trains sugar workers on OSH in Cam Sur

Pili, Camarines Sur – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Regional Office 5 and Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) Regional Extension Unit 5 are conducting a free Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Orientation today, October 6, 2016 at the Training Center of the Department of Agricultrure.


“The sugarcane industry is one of the key employment generators in Region 5 and also one of the most hazardous. Workers, which ofetn include whole families are exposed to pesticides, agrochemicals and intensive use of machinery plus a host of other hazards. We are going to strengthen the trainings for this sector to help ensure the safety and health of our farmers,” said OSHC Executive Director Ma. Teresita S. Cucueco, MD, CESO III.


The OSH orientation is a collaboration between DOLE, OSHC and the Bikol Sugar Planters Association, Inc. Some 46 sugar farmers and members of BISUPLA from Pili and neighboring towns attended the training.


Mr. Mark James Andayog, focal person for OSHC REU 5 discussed how to identify different types of hazards, causes and costs of accidents, control measures to prevent accidents and illnesses, and good housekeeping.
