DOLE-OSHC REU X conducts OSH orientation for SMEs

“As we always say, safety and health is non-negotiable for all workers and workplaces, be it in big establishments or small enterprises. We at the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) are working hard to reach our brothers and sisters in the underserved sectors, especially as they are often the most vulnerable of workers,” said OSHC Executive Director Ma. Teresita S. Cucuceco, MD, CESO III.

More than 30 participants from various small and micro enterprises in Cagayan de Oro benefitted from the occupational safety and health (OSH) orientation conducted by the OSHC Regional Extension Unit (REU) X. The OSH orientation is part of the Department of Labor and Employment’s support in the Kapatid Angat Lahat Program of the Department of Trade and Industry.

The OSH Orientation features lectures and discussions on the basics of safety and health, the common hazards present in small-scale and backyard enterprises such as materials handling and storage, poor housekeeping, use of sharps and other equipment, exposure to dust and other contaminants, inadequate ventilation and illumination, heat stress, and musculoskeletal disorders. Participants to this training are also given information on reproductive health, diseases such as HIV and AIDS, tuberculosis and Hepatitis B.
