DOLE-OSHC trains more than 36,000 workers in 2016


“As of today, we have a total of 36,527workers from 14,681 companies who benefitted from various OSH trainings conducted jointly by the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC), Occupational Safety and Health Networks (OSHNet) and DOLE-accredited Safety Training Organizations (STOs) for 2016. We still have on-going trainings both here in NCR and the rest of the regions plus hundreds more taking the on-line Basic Occupational Safety and Health Training, thus the number of trained workers will still increase by the end of this year,” said OSHC Executive Director Ma. Teresita S. Cucueco.


Of the above mentioned figures, 33,836 workers from 13,869 companies participated in both the classroom type and on-line Basic Occupational Safety and Health Training and Construction Occupational Safety and Health Training (CST). These 40-hour training courses are mandatory for safety officers under the Occupational Safety and Health Standards.


Of the abovementioned figures, 60 workers from various firecracker retail stores benefitted from the free BOSH conducted jointly by the OSHC and People 360, an accredited STO. On the other hand, some 1,660 staff and officials from the Department

of Public Works and Highways were trained in the COSH, while 78 seafarers were trained in the Maritime Occupational Safety and Health Training – the basic OSH training custom-fitted for workers in the maritime industry.


The OSH Appreciation Course, a free training custom-fitted for its target participants benefitted 1,041 workers from Local Government Units in Metro Manila and Zamboanga;1,328 farmers affected by El Niño in Zamboanga; 389 sugar workers in

Cagayan Valley, Davao, Capiz, and Camarines Sur; and 319 other informal sector workers in Quuezon Province and Cebu.


Specialized trainings such as Managing Health Related Problems at Work, Ergonomics in the Workplace for physicians; Chemical Safety, Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Labeling and Classification of Chemicals, Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene, Work Environment Measurement, Asbestos Training, Industrial Ventilation, and Fire Safety Training for engineers and safety officers, Crane and Forklift Safety and Scaffolding Training for construction workers benefited 2,691 workers from 812 companies.


To widen the base of competent trainers, the OSHC also conducted five batches of the Training of Trainers Course in Butuan, Baguio, Iloilo and the OSHC main office in Quezon City Cebu, for 80 trainers, while 531 students from various Universities attended the OSH orientation and tour of OSHC facilities.
