OSHC REU XI conducts job hazard analysis and OSH orientation for the differently abled

Some 30 differently abled workers benefit from the job hazard analysis and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) orientation conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) in cooperation with the DOLE Region XI and the Occupational Safety and Health Network (OSHNet) XI today, July 19, 2016 in Indangan, Buhangin, Davao City.

“Just like all of us, they must be protected from the hazards and risks they face in their jobs, in their case – furniture making. They must understand that the accidents such as cuts from using sharp tools and cutting and sanding machines, body aches and pains bourght about by improper posture and chemical hazards from using paint, thinner, varnish and other solvents are not part and parcel of the job. These untoward effects can be prevented through following safe work procedures, said Engr. Jennifer Talo during the orientation. Engr. Talo is the OSHC REU XI focal person.

The participants in the orientation were members of the Association of Differently Abled Persons (ADAP) which is a beneficiary of DOLE XI’s Livelihood Program. ADAP is producing chairs and tables for the Department of Education to be used in public schools.

Three of the participants are also set to attend the Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH) Training for free. The BOSH training is one of the 40-hour mandatory trainings for safety officers. Under Rule 1030 of the Occupational Safety and Health Standards, all establishments are required to employ a sufficient number of trained safety officers based on the number of workers they have.
