DOLE-OSHC reminds the public on road safety
“We know that many of our workers are on vacation mode already with the holy week upon us and we know that many of us will be on the road in the succeeding days so we took this opportunity to remind everyone on the importance of road safety,” said OSHC Deputy Executive Director Jose Maria Batino during the DOLE flag raising ceremony today, March 30, 2015.
The OSHC invited former LTO Chief and now Safety Organization of the Philippines Chair Engr. Alberto Suansing to discuss road safety in time for the holidays. Suansing reported that since 1970, the number of road accidents has increased by 650%, notwithstanding the unreported accidents that happen every day. “Many road accidents, both fatal and non-fatal are not reported because they have become such “routine” occurrences,” said Suansing.
Engr. Suansing urged everyone to be a responsible and courteous road user by 1) learning, understanding and obeying traffic rules and regulations, 2) Educating relatives, especially children, friends and colleagues about the proper road conduct, 3) ensuring that vehicles undergo preventive maintenance procedures before hitting the road, and 4) ensuring the health and well-being of the driver.
The responsibility for safety also extends to pedestrians. Engr. Batino added that those on foot must be disciplined enough to use the foot bridges, be mindful of the traffic flow before crossing streets and respect other people. Engr. Suansing added that “Ang kaligtasan sa lansangan ay tungkol sa pakikipagkapwa tao at halaga ng buhay.”
