There are 27,377 workers and safety officers trained on mandatory OSH courses – OSHC

A total of 27,377 workers and safety officers from 11,433 companies have already benefitted from the mandatory OSH trainings conducted by the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC), in cooperation with the Occupational Safety and Health Networks (OSHNets) from 2010-1015. Of this number, 12.4% or 3,405 workers from the informal sector and small-scale construction companies benefitted from free trainings.

The mandatory OSH courses include the 40-hour Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH) Training and Construction Safety Training (CST) for safety officers, and the one-day Construction Safety Orientation for construction workers. These are required under the Occupational Safety and Health Standards, DOLE Department Order Nos 13 and 16.

“We are grateful for our partners, specifically the OSHNets, for helping us provide the much needed OSH trainings and services to workers. There is so much demand for OSH information and training and we definitely need the support of all our advocates” said OSHC Executive Director Ma. Teresita S. Cucueco, MD, CESO III.

The OSHC also conducts specialized trainings such as Managing Health-related Problems at Work, Ergonomics in the Workplace, Chemical Safety, Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Labeling and Classification of Chemicals, Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene, Work Environment Measurement, Asbestos Training, Industrial Ventilation, Fire Safety Training, Crane and Forklift Safety and Scaffolding Training, as well as appreciation courses, learning sessions, and the training of trainers.

To help facilitate the conduct of the OSH trainings, the OSHC also undertakes accreditation of private safety training organizations (STOs). “We check their facilities, modules, and the availability of their competent trainers, as well as monitor their the implementation of their training activities to ensure that the same standard of training is being provided to participants whether they choose to take the training with the OSHC or with the STOs”, added Cucueco.

Aside from conducting OSH trainings, the OSHC is also mandated to conduct OSH researches, work environment measurement, testing of personal protective equipment (PPE), biologic monitoring and safety and health audits. Capabilities for these services are continuously being upgraded through partnerships with the International Labour Organization and ASEAN Occupational Safety and Health Network and other partners.
