OSHC orients DOLE livelihood beneficiaries in Tabaco City
Thirty-five (35) members of Barangay Salvacion Padyak Drivers Association in Tabaco City, composed of informal workers in small transport sector and urban poor, were oriented on occupational safety and health during the BUB Training Cum Production of Fiberglass Padyak Project held on 19 June 2015 at Salvacion, Tabaco City.
In assembling twenty (20) units of padyak, the beneficiaries will be exposed to hazards associated with portable oxy/fuel gas equipment such as fire caused by heat, sparks, molten metal or direct contact with the flame, harmful metal fume and gas by-products and crushing or impact injuries when handling and transporting materials. Thus, the discussion was focused on basics of safety and health, methods to recognize hazards and application of simple low-cost measures to prevent accidents and protect health through the introduction of ergonomic measures and improvements in work practices and working conditions, however, in certain cases personal protective equipment (PPE) may in addition be necessary.
The 10-day training was organized by the Department of Labor and Employment, Albay Provincial Field Office to prepare the beneficiaries through skills enhancement on business management, bookkeeping and occupational safety and health. DOLE continuously implements intervention or assistance to informal sector and vulnerable workers through emergency employment and promotion of entrepreneurship and community enterprises to strengthen social protection for vulnerable workers and sustainable income sources.
