OSHC in Bicol Highlights Accomplishments, Path Forward

OSHC highlighted the achievements made during the first 6 months of its operation in Bicol, stressing its dual mandate of protecting Filipino workers against accidents and illnesses and promoting workers' welfare through effective programs that enhance productivity, workers well-being and afford social protection to its client sector.

More than 20 media outlets from Camarines Norte and Naga City attended the DOLE RCC V “Ulat sa Bicol” Provincial Press Conference held on 25 June 2015 at Villa Milla Hotel, Daet, Camarines Norte. The annual event advocates the accomplishments of each member agency such as DOLE 5, NCMB, OWWA, NLRC, RTWPB, NRCO, ECC and OSHC.

Mr. Mark James S. Andayog, representative of OSHC in Bicol region, presented the preventive strategies conducted such as advocacy, information dissemination, capability building through training and interventions on workplace improvements. Almost 200 Safety Officers emerged from the several successful trainings on Construction Safety Training (CST) and Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH). The demand for safety officers is rising as employers become more aware of providing a safe and healthy workplace, thus, OSH trainings will be conducted per quarter in the region.

Also, a specialized course on Managing Emerging Health Issues in the Workplace was conducted wherein 57 participants composed of employers, human resource officers, workers' representatives, and members of OSH Committee acquired knowledge and skills needed to formulate a comprehensive corporate policy to alleviate occupational health issues and problems in their workplace. In addition, the group was also informed on the other Technical Assistance/Services that the Center can offer to the public/establishments.

Created by virtue of Executive Order No. 307, on November 1987 by then President Corazon C. Aquino, the OSHC is envisioned as the national authority for research and training on matters pertaining to safety and health at work. It provides the expertise and intervention mechanism to improve workplace conditions in the Philippines. The new extension unit of Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) is Bicol is the latest addition to the offices nationwide, and is a much-needed supplement to coordinate the OSH mandates, programs, trainings and other advocacy activities in the region.
