DOLE-OSHC and OSHNETs train 722 new safety officers

The Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) together with Occupational safety and health networks have trained 722 new safety officers on the mandatory 40-hour OSH courses – the Basic Occupational Safety and Health (BOSH) Training and Construction Safety Training (CST) this June.

A total of 292 workers from 220 companies benefitted from six batches of BOSH conducted in the OSHC main office in Quezon City and in Cebu, Cavite, Isabela, Davao and Bohol. On the other hand, 430 participants from 211 companies attended nine batches of CST held in Quezon City, Davao, General Santos, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro, Butuan, Iloilo, Cebu and Dagupan.

The BOSH and CST are required under the Occupational Safety and Health Standards, DOLE Department Order Nos 13 and 16. The CST is also reiterated in the Memorandum of Agreement-Joint Administrative Order on Construction Safety signed by the DOLE and the Departments of Public Works and Highways, Interior and Local Government, and Trade and Industry (Construction Manpower Development Foundation, Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board) as well as the Philippine Regulation Commission in 2011.

Under the above-mentioned regulations, companies must employ a sufficient number of trained safety officers depending on the number of their workers. The safety officer/s will be responsible for assisting in the development of a safety and health policy as well as overseeing the implementation of the company’s safety and health program.

“Now more than ever, we need to make companies in all industries understand the need to comply with the Occupational Safety and Health Standards to ensure the safety and health of their workers and boost their productivity. We are promoting the preventive strategies because it’s so much easier to eliminate the hazards and risks than to deal with accidents, casualties and damage to property. With the growing number of safety officers who have been capacitated to implement safety and health programs and share the information with their colleagues, we hope to see a lower number of work-related accidents and illnesses and better working environments,” said OSHC Executive Director Ma. Teresita S. Cucueco, MD, CESO III.
