“The shake drill is a very good emergency preparedness strategy because it not only informed the people what to do in case the ‘big one’ happens but it also showed us the gaps that we have to address,” said Occupational Safety and Health Executive Director Ma. Teresita S. Cucueco, MD, CESO III, yesterday.

Like all the other government agencies and private establishments in the Metro Manila, OSHC joined the shake drill which began at 10:30 AM on July 30, 2015. All the employees including the participants to the on-going OSH trainings were instructed to do the “duck-cover-and hold” for 45 seconds then to calmly proceed to the evacuation area.

Emergency preparedness is one of the modules discussed in the mandatory, 40-hour Basic Occupational Safety and Health Training and Construction Safety Training required for all safety officers. The module includes response procedures for natural calamities such as earthquakes, typhoons, floods and tsunamis, and volcanic eruptions, as well as for man-made emergencies such as bomb threats, chemical spills and fires.

“After the drill, we were able to identify areas that need more efficient responses such as scenarios wherein the earthquake happens during a storm, or when there are big activities like national conferences going on in an area,” added Cucueco. “We will continue to develop more effective emergency preparedness plans for the difficult situations that will arise and diseeminate these to the workers and the public.
