DOLE-OSHC trains more than 20,000 workers in 2015

“As of today, we have a total of 20,025 workers from 8,731 companies who benefitted from 17 different types of trainings conducted jointly by the Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Networks (OSHNet) for 2015. We still have on-going trainings both here in NCR and the rest of the regions plus hundreds more taking the on-line Basic Occupational Safety and Health Training, thus the number of trained workers will still increase by the end of this year,” said OSHC Executive Director Ma. Teresita S. Cucueco.


Of the above mentioned figures, 9,486 workers from 5,698 companies participated in both the classroom type and on-line Basic Occupational Safety and Health Training and Construction Safety Training (CST). These 40-hour training courses are mandatory for safety officers under the Occupational Safety and Health Standards. A total of 116 workers from small-scale construction companies and attended the five-day CST held at the OSHC main Office in Quezon City and in General Santos City for free.


The Construction Safety Orientation, a one-day seminar for workers in the construction industry benefitted 532 workers from 15 companies, including representatives from the Philippine Navy. The OSH Orientation on the other hand benefitted 2,528 workers from Agusan, Baguio Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cagayan Valley, Isabela, Laguna, Metro Manila, Nueva Vizcaya, Surigao, and Zamboanga.


The OSH Appreciation Course, a free training custom-fitted for informal sector, benefitted 679 workers from the Dinagat Islands, Isabela and the Persons with Disabilities Kabuhayan Industries Association.


Specialized trainings such as Managing Health Related Problems at Work, Ergonomics in the Workplace, Chemical Safety, Globally Harmonized System (GHS) of Labeling and Classification of Chemicals, Fundamentals of Industrial Hygiene, Work Environment Measurement, Asbestos Training, Industrial Ventilation, Fire Safety Training, Crane and Forklift Safety and Scaffolding Training were held in 22 batches benefitting 1,519 workers from 545 companies.


Eight types of learning sessions on HIV and AIDS, prevention of drug abuse in the workplace, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis B, ergonomics, OSH issuances for contact centers, and OSH standards were conducted in 61 batches for 2,587 workers from 888 companies. Special lectures on general OSH, OSHC services, OSH Standards, industrial hygiene, GHS, OSH for LMCs and work-relatedness of diseases requested by 214 companies were attended by 963 workers.


To widen the base of competent trainers, the OSHC also conducted four batches of the Training of Trainers Course in Cebu, General Santos and Quezon City for 62 trainers, while 410 students from various Universities attended the OSH orientation and tour of OSHC facilities.


In addition, the safety training organizations accredited by the OSHC were able to train 13,432 workers from 4,972 companies, bringing the number of trained workers to 33,421 for 2015.
