Industries and individuals in Bicol vie for the DOLE's Gawad Kaligtasan at Kalusugan

The high quality and breadth of the 2016 entries for the 10th Gawad Kaligtasan at Kalusugan (GKK) prove once again how innovative and outstanding the establishments and individuals are in terms of responding to the safety and health needs of workers, workplaces, and communities. Now on its 10th year, the GKK, one of the five good housekeeping seals under the DOLE Incentivizing Compliance Program, aims to encourage companies to voluntarily comply with general labor laws and occupational safety and health standards. It is a biennial award given by the DOLE to companies and individuals with outstanding occupational safety and health practices, programs, innovations and contributions.

In Bicol, the Regional GKK Secretariat started its visit to the companies that complied with documentary requirements and make an initial workplace evaluation using the LLCS assessment checklist on OSH. The Philippine Geothermal Production Company, Inc. (PGPCI), Libjo, Tiwi, Albay and AP Renewables, Inc. – Tiwi Geothermal Plant, Brgy. Naga, Tiwi, Albay were evaluated last January 19-20, 2016 by the team composed of the representatives from the Regional Extension Unit 5 of the OSHC and the Employees’ Compensation Commission (ECC) and from the DOLE Regional Office 5. During on-site validation, forms and supporting papers they submitted were reviewed by the team, conducted a walkthrough of the company premises and validation with the community. The commendable safety and health records have shown their improvement in occupational safety and health processes through sound safety and health management systems.

Early this year, nominees from all regions submitted documents for initial screening and onsite validation. The results will be deliberated on by the Regional Selection Committee to officially name the Regional Winners or Qualifiers. All winners in the Regional Level will be endorsed to the National GKK Secretariat for the selection of the national winners.
