DOLE-OSHC and Bicol OSHNET hold Construction Occupational Safety and Health Training for students
For the first time, the Construction Occupational Safety and Health Training has been conducted for college students last January 18-22, 2016 at the Bicol University.
“We want to introduce the basic concepts of safety and health to students before they even enter the workforce and we have been working on including safety and health as part of the curriculum of engineering courses,” said Occupational Safety and Health Center (OSHC) Executive Director Ma. Teresita S. Cucueco, MD.
Together, the Bicol University College of Engineering, Bicol Occupational Safety and Health Network, Inc. (Bicol OSHNet, and DOLE Regional Office 5, and OSHC conducted the COSH for 50 engineering students.
The COSH training is the 40-Hour mandatory training course required for safety officers in the construction industry. The five day training features discussions on accident causes and prevention, construction site safety, occupational health and environmental safety. The hierarchy of controls were also discussed to advocate the procedures to protect workers such as eliminate the hazard; substitute less hazardous materials, processes, operations or equipment; implement engineering controls; introduce administrative controls such as safe work procedures, education and training, job rotation, and supply personal protective equipment.
“The high rates of injury among workers are a pressing public health issue, incorporating OSH information in education and recognizing its important contribution to the development of safety cultures might provide a mechanism for reducing work-related injuries and illnesses among new workers”, said DOLE RO5 Regional Director Nathaniel V. Lacambra.
